Successful Launch Year for Renovation Planning Software Scandens
The ETH spin-off Scandens reports a successful first year since the launch of its renovation planning software in June 2023. The software has already had a good impact on the Swiss real estate industry. Energy consulting companies, architects, real estate companies, insurers, pension funds and housing cooperatives have optimized 274 properties for cost and CO2 using the software. This results in estimated savings of CHF 42 million and 116,500 tons of CO2 over the next 25 years.
Scandens’ web-based software solution combines artificial intelligence with building modeling and life-cycle cost calculations. This enables energy consultants and property owners to plan their renovation projects comprehensively and quickly. The automated process includes data collection, feasibility assessment, component planning, and component selection, as well as economic and CO2 accounting, including gray emissions.
Happy Customers and Significant Savings
In the first 7 months since its launch, housing cooperatives, energy consulting companies, real estate companies, architects, and insurers have analyzed and optimized 274 properties using Scandens. As a result, customers are estimated to save CHF 42 million and 116,500 tons of CO2 over the next 25 years.
Chris Steffen, Energy Transition Specialist at the consulting firm dieProjektfabrik, has been using Scandens for three months: “An address, a few clicks, and a check from my side - and a comprehensive renovation plan is ready. This plan complies with legal requirements, aligns with common reporting standards, and even demonstrates technical feasibility, costs, and grants. Scandens is the ideal software solution for our consulting product ‘ImmoStrat’ and saves our team at least 3 hours of work per building.”
Relevance of Decarbonization in the Building Sector
With a share of 26% of direct CO2 emissions in Switzerland, the building sector plays a central role in the climate debate. Optimizations in existing buildings have the greatest impact. “The current renovation rate of 1% is insufficient to achieve the net-zero goal. With our software, we aim to provide decision-makers with the tools to plan renovations more efficiently and cost-effectively - thereby increasing the renovation rate,” says Diego Sigrist, co-founder of Scandens.
